'Gripping and surpassingly original' – Cory Doctorow, author of Walkaway
Earth's military machine can transform elderly recruits, restoring their lost youth. But in return, its Colonial Defence Force demands two years of hazardous service in space. This is how Perry finds himself in a new body, crafted from his original DNA. A genetically enhanced and upgraded new body, ready for battle.
But upgrades alone won't keep Perry safe. He'll be fighting for his life on the front line as he defends humanity's colonies from hostile aliens. He'll pay the price for his choices. And he'll discover the universe is even more dangerous than he imagined . . .
'A space war story with fast action, vivid characters, moral complexity, and cool speculative physics' – Ken MacLeod, author of Beyond the Light Horizon

New fresh topics on the table of sci-fi
Let’s be honest, sci-fi is about new perspectives on old and contemporary stuff. Good authors just do that very, very well.
And Scalzi does that too, in a very specific way.
His books are easy to read and manage to stay “light” with respect to the reading experience. But make no mistake, the characters are carved out to convey specific psychological tensions between conflicting thoughts, points of view or situations.
Scalzi wraps decision-making under uncertainty, resource scarcity, information delay, the sense of self and belonging, aging, competition economics, AI and some physics.
Then he put this package in a spaceship and throws it to an alien planet where it lands starship troopers-style.
After the book ends, all the unanswered questions of his universe, on the farthest boundaries of morality, personal psychology, and politics, all of these remain with you, as a homework.
A good read.
