Isabelle Farrell is in hiding. Her friends helped her leave her abusive ex in one day. She found refuge in a renovated slave cabin on an old plantation. She cut all ties to her former life in an effort to start again.

Jonah Wallace was a slave back when the Larivee Plantation grew cotton. He died trying to prevent another slave from being beaten to death. He expected to make his way to Heaven. Centuries later, he was a ghost still wandering the plantation watching the world change and waiting for God to call him home.

Isabelle has a nightmare about her ex and wakes up to find him standing at the foot of her bed. She screams then realizes the man that looks like her ex isn't him. It's a ghost named Jonah. With all she's been through in real life, talking to a ghost holds no fear. She gets to know him and considers him a friend.

A trip to a new grocery store has Isabelle bumping into someone from her old life. It is that accident of fate that allows her ex to find her again. Jonah develops a new ability and is able to protect her for the time being. Then an angel arrives to take him to Heaven.

Jonah must make the hardest decision of his life. If he takes the angel's hand, the woman he loves will die.
