The novel “Cannery Row” by John Steinbeck was published in 1945. It was made into a film in the year 1982. In the year 1995, the stage version was produced and enacted.

The story of the novel is set in a place on a street which has rows of sardine fisheries in Monterey. The place is known as Cannery Row. The story revolves around the characters that lived during the Great Depression in Monterey. The significant characters in the novel include Lee Chong who is a local grocer, Doc who happens to be a marine biologist and whose character is based on the character of Steinbeck’s friend Ed Ricketts, and Mack who is the leader of a group of the people called bums.
