Recollections of Countess Theresa Brunswick

This is a recollection written by Mariam Tenger of her conversations with Countess Theresa Brunswick, who at one time was thought to be the recipient of a mysteriously unaddressed letter by Beethoven. Known as the Immortal Beloved letter, the piece of correspondence was found in Beethoven's room after his death, and since then it has spawned nearly a dozen different theories about whom Beethoven was writing to. In her preface, Tenger refers to Alexander Thayer's famous biography of Beethoven, in which he also alleges that Theresa Brunswick alone could have been Beethoven's Immortal Beloved. However, in more than a century of debate since the publication of Tenger's memoir, Theresa Brunswick has been discounted in favor of other more likely candidates, including her sister, Josephine Brunswick.
