Joint swelling and pain are commonly evaluated by orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologists. Given the scarcity of pediatric rheumatologists, it is not unusual for a child with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) to present initially to an orthopaedic surgeon. A rational and evidence-based approach is needed when evaluating children with suspected rheumatologic disorders. Diagnosis
