ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper was to review the literature regarding the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and management of rib stress fractures in competitive and recreational rowers. Rib stress fractures are the most common type of rowing injury that prevents the rower from continuing on-water training and competition. A broad literature review was conducted to locate recent studies on the pathophysiology and diagnosis of rib stress fractures and to summarize strategies to prevent these fractures based upon an understanding of rowing biomechanics, training techniques, and types of rowing equipment.
