Matthew was a tax collector. In Jesus's day, Jewish tax collectors worked for the Romans and were frequently resented for being unjust. Then one day, Jesus invited him to follow his path. Matthew accepted Jesus into his house and became an apostle. After Jesus went into heaven, Matthew shared the Good News and composed one of the gospels. He is the patron (September 21) of tax collectors, bankers, and accountants.
Saints are real-life heroes of religion who inspire us by their virtues to become more like Christ. In the Saints and Me! series -- Saints for Communities, these gorgeously illustrated early-reader books relate the genuine tales of saints that come to life.
