Introduction Many coastal communities on the West Coast of the USA have seen dramatic growth and transformation over the past decade with a shift in employment away from traditional extractive natural resource-based industries, such as fishing and logging, to service and trade industries. Questions remain, however, as to the continued importance of these traditional industries in the community's economic base.
