Standish Lawder and The Cubist Cinema

Standish Lawder was both a film artist and an art historian. As an artist, he made a series of provocative, visually ingenious films which are as compelling now as they were a half century ago.


As an art historian. Lawder was a pioneer in serious art historical research on the subject of the European avant-garde of the 1920s. Published in 1975 by NYU Press, The Cubist Cinema played a key role making postwar American film artists aware of their European roots.


This volume combines two critical essays on Lawder’s films with the complete original text of The Cubist Cinema.
