1. INTRODUCTION Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant plasma cell disorder characterized by a clonal proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow (1). The clinical course is variable with typical features including osteolytic bone lesions, anaemia and the presence of monoclonal protein which can be detected as a M-component and/or free light chain in the serum and/or urine. Renal insufficiency occurs at some time point during the disease course in about 25% of patients (pts) and hypercalcaemia may be present at diagnosis or at time of disease progression.
