Chapter 1: When the earth was young, Mother Nature saw that it was barren. So she made trees. They were impressive, with strong trunks flowing into long branches. But they were a pale gray color. Mother Nature loved the trees but felt bad because they looked so dull. Out of her desire for the trees to be beautiful sprang the Brown Fairy.

Mother Nature said “Brown Fairy, you are handsome and strong, and you can bring color to our world. Please paint our trees brown.” Brown Fairy was pleased to do so. He swooped down upon the world and painted all the trees amber, tan and other shades of brown. When he was finished, he was tired but happy.
