The Chemistry of Synthetic Dyes

Historically, the name "sulfur dyes" has been applied to both a chemical class of dyes and a dyeing class. The first sulfur dyes were all made by thionation of various organic materials with either sulfur or sodium polysulfide, and they were all applied to cotton from sodium sulfide solution.
