The Devi Mahatmya

For over a thousand years, the Devi Mahatmya has been the heart of Hindu goddess worship—a luminous tale of divine power, courage, and grace. This modern-English edition captures the beauty and spiritual depth of the original Sanskrit classic in clear, flowing language that today’s reader can savor and reflect upon. Here you will meet the goddess Durga as she rises to restore cosmic balance, facing the buffalo demon Mahishasura and the brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha. The epic’s three episodes unfold as a spiritual journey: from the awakening of the Great Goddess to her acts of cosmic protection and the final boons of peace and presence. Whether you are new to this tradition or seeking a fresh encounter with its sacred verses, this rendering preserves the work’s reverence, rhythm, and meaning while making it truly accessible.
