Ten-year-old Amanda Greene doesn't fit in anywhere. Her mom has recently passed away, leaving her with a sad and lonely heart. But there is no one to turn to for comfort. Amanda's father is often away on business trips. Her teenaged sister Jane treats her with cruel indifference. And school is no better, where she is constantly teased and tormented by bullies.

To escape reality, Amanda creates fantasy stories. At least she is safe there. But one day, she hears a strange cry from the  forest she passes on her way home from school--a talking pebble!

Amanda and the pebble become friends, and she longs to share the secret with others, but as she tries to battle the bullying at school and Jane's growing hostility, her magical world is suddenly threatened by danger. Amanda has impossibly stumbled upon this magical world. Will holding onto it be possible?
