The Healing Moment

This collection of fifty black-and-white photographs, made by internationally acclaimed photographer Abraham Menashe, offers readers communion with moments of revelation—spiritual awakenings that arouse the soul. They are moments experienced through touch, personal reflection, self-acceptance, gratitude, laughter, celebration, and empathy with others.


The photographs were made in religious, therapeutic, medical settings, and include key moments in the life cycle relating to birth, illness, loss, and friendship.


Menashe writes, “I am profoundly touched by how we attend to each other’s wounds, how we give to and care for one another, and decided early in my career—in a world in need of affirmation—to mine images that illuminate and enlighten, that comfort and sustain, that bind us to one another.


We find a lone nurse communing with a newborn; an anti-war demonstrator freely defying the establishment; a psychotherapist offering unconditional acceptance to her client; a mother gazing into her baby’s serene face; a wheelchair bound young woman at the beach, with open arms greeting the sky; a home-care aid reassuring a frightened elderly Alzheimer's patient.


With this collection we come to know moments meant to be witnessed only by loitering angels. We discover that our essential core is peaceful and whole; that it is not about the knowledge we gain, but how we nourish the light within and how we love one another. In the reconciled stillness of the photographs, a small voice cries out “you must help carry the world.”
