The Lion and the Mouse

A judge is destroyed by a financier who owns the newspapers, the senators and the courts — and the judge's daughter goes into the great man's house under another name to find the proof. Klein wrote the play, the biggest Broadway hit of its decade, and died on the Lusitania in 1915; this is the novel made from it. The lion is drawn from the trusts everyone in 1906 could name, and the mouse does the work. Forty-nine plates of horses, hounds, cattle and weather, from Richard Barrett Davis to George Bellows, give the trusts their natural setting: a world of breeds and bloodlines where the strong own the field.
