The Mercurian

On a blistering Mercury mining outpost, young Dave serves under Ellison, a calm and highly capable leader whose steady authority keeps the crew alive amid heat, optical illusions, and constant danger. Their harsh routine is shattered when Murphy returns from an expedition with a living Mercurian creature, froglike and astonishingly real. Acting on instinct, Dave freezes it with liquid air, believing he is preserving evidence, only to discover that he has destroyed Murphy's priceless find. The loss ignites a furious brawl that Ellison must break up with force, exposing the crew's raw emotions beneath their disciplined front. As Dave recovers, Sylvia Varner—Ellison's niece and Dave's fiancée—challenges his assumptions about the creature and the impossible conditions that allowed it to survive on Mercury. Their exchange mixes romance, scientific curiosity, and pride, while deepening the mystery of alien life on a world where survival demands judgment, restraint, and trust.
