This study aims to offer a historical and sociological analysis of one of the most important regions of Italy, both in terms of economic development and cultural modernity. The most important issue is the continuity between the Most Serene Republic of Venice - La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia - and its mainland, Il Serenissimo Veneto. The latter is called thus precisely because many of the aspects of its production and culture of creation of wealth are understandable only through the connection between these two historical phenomenons.
Veneto is an area of approximately 5 million inhabitants that seems homogeneous from many points of view - so much so that it now appears more and more as a typical globalised megacity. The book demonstrates how quality of life and social relations are the main driving forces of this original globalised city, and that it also has specific characteristics of a green city.
The weak and backward political system, unable to manage such a glocal phenomenon, puts all these future prospects to risk of a destructive fragmentation of the integrated community that is unable to project itself towards globalisation and its future challenges.
