The 21st Century has so far largely been defined by a sense of anti-feminism, fuelled by lad culture and a rejection of political correctness. History has proven that with every definitive wave of feminism comes a resurgence of patriarchal ideals shortly after. Society, in defiance of new thought, seems to look back to previous discourse in these circumstances, compromising into the ideological melting pot that is modern culture. Each wave of feminism has undoubtedly wielded significant gains, however the very fact we still live in a patriarchal society shows that traditional, prejudicial ideals are not yet a thing of the past. Somewhat strange however, is the adoption of today’s laddish culture by a large number of young women. Just as Laura Mulvey theorised with cinema in the 1970’s, is it possible that these young women are adopting a transvestite stance on modern issues of sexism? Why do so many of today’s women choose not to associate with contemporary feminist discourse?


The following images have been collected form various online sources, and show women posing for the camera whilst wearing football shirts. I found it interesting how common this type of imagery is, and how similar examples can be found for almost every large football club in the UK. What strikes me about this collection is the similarities in terms of posing, composition and style that can be found throughout, as well as the objectified role which the women seem keen to embody.
