When it's all you can do, not very good is good enough

As our vampire narrator continues his reflections on a long life, he recounts an encounter with an old, fusty member of his race. The narrator has been sent to see if the old man - for he was old, even when he became a vampire - has been breaking the rules.

But the conversation takes an unexpected turn, and one of recent history's mysteries becomes a bit clearer.
