It also includes her narration of when she made hospital visits to her dying friends' playwright, Sam Shepard, and journalist-producer Sandy Pearlman. The memoir contains her thoughts about the rise of populism and the dirtiness of the election battle.

Patti Smith's Year of the Monkey was published on September 24, 2019, by Knopf. It became a New York Times bestseller after its release.
