Fresh-faced Assistant US Attorney Vicki Allegretti is not just getting her feet wet - she's been thrown into the pool. While meeting a confidential informant regarding a case, Vicki stumbles upon something far worse, and finds herself facing the barrel of a gun with a panicky teenager on the other end.

Vicki's life is spared, but her partner isn't so lucky, shot dead before she could react. To Vicki, this was a cut-and-dry case, one in which rookie AUSAs cut their teeth, rack up a win, and move on to the tough stuff. Instead, Vicki is left reeling, and the ensuing investigation leaves her with more answers.
