Stine

Bei dem kleinen Roman „Stine“ war sich Fontane darüber im klaren, dass sich „der Durchschnittsgeschmack“ und „die Durchschnittskritik“ dagegen auflehnen würden, daß er mit „Stine“ „kein Schriftsteller für den Familientisch mit eben eingesegneten Töchtern“ geschrieben habe. Das Thema des Romans – die Liebe eines Mädchen aus niederem Stand zu einem Adligen – hatte Fontane schon in „Irrungen, Wirrungen“ behandelt, „Stine“ ist das Pendant dazu und gefiel dem Autor eigentlich besser. Und mit der Witwe Pittelkow hat er wirklich eine Figur geschaffen, wie sie lebendiger, echter nicht sein kann. Sie ist die eigentliche Hauptperson.
Author Theodor Fontane was expecting the “common taste” and “common critique” to be highly skeptical of his short novel “Stine” because it was not necessarily suited for the family table. The novel revolves around the love of a young commoner girl to a nobleman. While Fontane already utilized similar themes in “Irrungen, Wirrungen” (Trials and Tribulations), the author preferred “Stine” himself. Especially the character of the widow Pittelkow is one of his most realistic characters, and one might argue that she is the story’s true protagonist.
