A Siren

At Ravenna’s last Carnival ball, Ludovico and Bianca whirl through a breathless waltz while his uncle watches; in an hour, the revelry should be over.

In provincial Ravenna, Shrove Tuesday runs late: masked nobles dance on as if the clock can be cheated and Lent held at bay. The dignified Marchese Lamberto di Castelmare, one of the city’s most respected men, cannot join them. He can only watch his nephew Ludovico and the celebrated singer Bianca Lalli, dazzling in matching Venetian dress, draw closer—and imagine an understanding that may not exist. As jealousy turns the crowded ballroom into a private torment, a morning excursion to the Pineta promises to carry the tension beyond the dance. What will the dawn reveal?
