A Winter's Day

Each time I visit Canada, I am struck by the diversity. The diversity I find there is not only in the populous and landscape, but in the climate, seasons, cultures as well. My latest visit, in February 2013, was no exception. I was fortunate enough to be there during the annual Winter Festival in Quebec City, which reminded me very much of Paris, and I fell in love almost immediately with its ambiance, cuisine, architecture, and people. 


Québec City is the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec, and at the time of this publication, has a population of roughly half-a-million souls. If you add in the surrounding metropolitan area, the population blossoms to almost 800,000 people, making it the second most populous city in Quebec after Montreal.


I have been in Canada when it was almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius), but this was my first experience in Canada where the temperature was so far below freezing that even measuring the temperature seemed a purely academic exercise. Growing up in the Southern part of the United States, I was unfamiliar with true cold, and found quickly that I was made for warmer climes. Quebec City was so beautiful however, that I could not resist spending every minute possible exploring those parts of the city that were within walking distance of my hotel, as I was sorely under-dressed for my adventure.
