Agamemnon is the first play in Aeschylus' renowned Oresteia trilogy and one of the greatest tragedies of ancient Greek literature. The drama begins as King Agamemnon returns to Argos after leading the Greek victory in the Trojan War. Although he is welcomed home as a conquering hero, unseen tensions and long-standing grievances threaten his triumph. His wife, Clytemnestra, has never forgiven him for sacrificing their daughter, Iphigenia, before the war, and she has carefully planned her revenge during his long absence. Agamemnon's arrival with the Trojan princess Cassandra, who possesses the gift of prophecy, further deepens the atmosphere of impending doom. As fate, justice, and vengeance converge, the royal household is consumed by betrayal and violence, setting in motion a cycle of retribution that shapes the rest of the trilogy. Through powerful dialogue and poetic language, Aeschylus explores themes of justice, pride, revenge, fate, and the devastating consequences of violence. Agamemnon remains a timeless masterpiece of Greek tragedy, celebrated for its psychological depth, moral complexity, and profound influence on Western drama.
