Published in 1959, “Cat and Mouse” is a sci-fi short story. The main character is a canny old Alaskan trapper, Ed Brown who arrives at his remote cabin for a season of work but discovers a mysterious portal to an alien world. This door-to-another-place shows beautiful mountains and a nice, summer forest. One day Ed goes to the other world to have a look. It turns out that a group of nasty, camouflaged animals are waiting for him, and thus ensues a battle between human hunter and the hive-mind creatures. Man vs. Nature is a common plot theme.
