Teenager Scarlett is dealing with her parents’ recent divorce, she is having problems with her mother, Rhonda. Her father, Fred is a compulsive hoarder, who has bipolar disorder and lives in his Kombi Van. Fred has only been granted supervised visits with her, her younger brother Oscar and their little sister Bronte. 

Scarlett tries her best not to resort to self-harming but her greatest fear is that she has inherited her father’s mental illness. Her mother doesn’t help to dismiss this fear by insisting Scarlett see the psycho-the-rapist. Scarlett has lots of friends on her social network but no real friends—until she meets Dakota whose mother has also demanded she seek professional help. In the waiting room Scarlett the ‘angry’ and Dakota the ‘under-achiever’ meet and become kindred spirits. Dakota is the only friend who accepts Scarlett for who she is—and more importantly for who her father is—and for what Scarlett may become.
