D is for Deadwalk

On death row, time doesn't pass- it closes in.

Awaiting his final walk at the Polunsky Unit in Texas, a condemned man counts the days not by hope, but by the certainty of what waits for him. Execution is inevitable. What comes after is not.

Since childhood, he has possessed a terrible ability. The power to slip into the in‑between, a shadowed realm that exists alongside reality, where distance collapses, essence lags, and motion is survival. A place where stopping means being found.

The in‑between is not empty.

Something lives there. It hunts. It learns. And every crossing leaves a trace.

As memories of abuse, crime, and moral failure bleed into the present, the narrator wrestles with a single question. When the body dies, where does the soul go? Especially one that has walked between worlds. Heaven and hell offer simple answers. The in‑between offers none.

Now confined to a cell once occupied by a notorious killer, the boundary grows thin. The scratching grows closer. The rules that once kept him safe no longer apply.

With execution looming, escape may still be possible, but crossing over one last time could mean trading one death for something far worse.
