Developing Number Strategies

Many of us went through school learning to add, subtract, multiply and divide by memorizing steps and following strict procedures to find a correct answer to an equation. Rather than just focusing on fluency and accuracy we want children to learn how to be flexible in their thinking and to understand that there are many different ways to arrive at a solution. Mathematics is about creativity, making connections and reasoning.
