Dick Prescott’s Second Year at West Point

After a morning digging military trenches beneath the summer sun, Dick Prescott and his fellow cadets have minutes to scrub up before dinner. Then lightning splits the sky over West Point—and the yearlings hope their afternoon drill will disappear in the storm.

In the heat of summer encampment, Dick, Greg Holmes, and Tom Anstey have been yearlings at the United States Military Academy for just three days. The ordeals of plebe life are behind them; a campstool and friendly recognition feel like luxuries. But their new standing brings new power: yearlings are the ones who take the plebes in hand, and hazing is part of cadet life. Between exacting rules, hard drills, and the temptation to enjoy their authority, what kind of yearling will Dick become?
