Lochlyn Blackmoor was the last dragon shifter in Alessia, alone in the world ever since his brothers and then his parents passed. Now he has his beloved wife, Rosalie, and together they've built a family. They're content to enjoy a quiet life, until they receive unsettling news from Serpens.

A powerful seer is marked for death, all because she helped Lochlyn free Rosalie's sister from the king's clutches.
Despite the fact that he can't shift, Lochlyn embarks on a rescue mission to Serpens, with his brother-in-law and spymaster in tow. Once there, one of their few allies—Arthus Flameborn, Grand Master of the Order of the Phoenix—abandons them. As they run out of time and options, Lochlyn turns to a former foe for assistance: Basilisk, the same rogue shifter he freed from the Order's dungeon.

Though once an enemy, Basilisk proves a worthy ally, and his vast knowledge of the capital and the royal family comes in handy more than once. As more of Basilisk's past is revealed, Lochlyn learns Alessia's darkest, most dangerous secret, a bit or information so deadly It could unravel everything. And there's the fact that the Grand Master, despite nearly getting them killed, wants to form a relationship with his granddaughter, Rosalie, and he doesn't care who he hurts in the process—not even Rosalie.

The seer predicted that Lochlyn will shift again, and he needs his dragon now more than ever.
