When alien meets human, who discovers whom?
Intrepid explorer Greg Townsend finds a defunct robot in the deep Amazon. Unable to make heads nor tails of it, he mails it to his brilliant ex-wife, Parime "Pari" Jimenez, a roboticist at Stanford University. She promptly throws it in the trash, but her seven-year-old niece Mia, pulls it out and convinces Pari to try to make sense of it. A little work later they have it awake and talking.
'It' is named Tolek and has a surprising sense of humor, a dark secret, and an honest request: 'please take me home.' Wanting to learn more about this strangely advanced robot, Pari leaves Mia for a two week trip deep into the Amazon with Greg to return it to where it came from. Their journey takes them through an ancient doorway and into a hidden land with cultures unseen for hundreds of years. They learn what befell the great Percy Fawcett, where the last of the Incas really went, and come face to face with the ancient Amazonian legend, the black jaguar who guards the underworld.
It is curiosity that brings Greg and Pari into this. But what will get them out?
