Evangelism Next is an exploration of the practice of evangelism for a new era of Christianity. This collection of essays, drawn from the proceedings of the 2023 Fuller Theological Seminary Missiology Lectures, brings together academics and practitioners from around the world and across multiple disciplines. Evangelism as a church practice has come under scrutiny. While the practice of evangelism has been challenged, the need for communicating the evangel has increased.
Part I examines the dysfunctional narratives in need of de-construction in our current practices of evangelism. Hyper-individualism, consumerism, racism, patriarchy, and other systems of oppression that have characterized evangelistic practices are explored from multiple theological perspectives and disciplines. Part II demonstrates new models emerging from global and local contexts: from holistic mission and interfaith engagement to Spirit-empowered grassroots movements, communal evangelism, and the vital witness of incarcerated believers.
Evangelism Next invites readers into a dynamic reimagining of what it means to bear witness to the gospel today—one that is contextually aware, justice-oriented, and open to the transformative work of the Spirit. This is essential reading for anyone passionate about renewing the practice of evangelism in a changing and complex world.
