In 1904, sixteen-year-old Maggie Bennet is preparing for a glittering debut in Gilded Age Newport when her mother mysteriously disappears.

Most people believe her missing mother is dead, but Maggie does not. When her architect father takes a new position in Yellowstone National Park, Maggie is curious: her mother's trail may lead to Yellowstone. But by departing the east coast Maggie's forced to leave Newport society, her friends, and her potential betrothed behind.

Yellowstone is unlike anything Maggie has ever known. Geysers erupt from the earth, wild animals roam beyond the trails, and the rules that governed her privileged life suddenly seem very far away. And then she meets Tom Rowland, a local boy whose honesty and independence challenge Maggie's assumptions about class, love, and the future she thought she wanted.

As Maggie searches for clues to her mother's fate, she begins to uncover family secrets, and a strength within herself she never knew she possessed. Finding her mother may mean giving up the safe, predictable life she has always known.
