Heroes throw themselves into conflicts, sort things out, and emerge victorious.
Drome is great at the first of those. The other two? Not so much.
When an oddly shaped gazebo magically transports his village—people, houses, shops, and all—to a remote spot in a weird hollow world, he is kidnapped by a pair of local courtiers who want to get their hands on the device that brought the village to their world. To them, the gazebo is a prize beyond measure.
The trouble is, the gazebo was damaged by the process. The courtiers threaten to kill Drome if the villagers don't rebuild it. Pronto.
But the villagers have splintered into warring factions, and ignore his plight.
With the help of Nev, a living skeleton, Drome escapes and heads back to his village. If only he could avoid getting into a bother with everyone he encounters on the journey, he might stand a chance of arriving in time to warn his fellow villagers about the Emperor's troops who are on their way to wipe them out.
