Set entirely at Wybrany College—a school where the wealthy keep their kids safe from the chaos erupting in the cities—Four by Four is a novel of insinuation and gossip, in which the truth about Wybrany’s “program” is always palpable, but never explicit. The mysteries populating the novel open with the disappearance of one of the “special,” scholarship students. As the first part unfolds, it becomes clear that all is not well in Wybrany, and that something more sordid lurks beneath the surface.
In the second part—a diary written by an imposter who has infiltrated the school as a substitute teacher—the eerie sense of what’s happening in this space removed from society, becomes more acute and potentially sinister.
An exploration of the relationship between the powerful and powerless—and the repetition of these patterns—Mesa’s "sophisticated nightmare" calls to mind great works of gothic literature (think Shirley Jackson) and social thrillers to create a unique, unsettling view of freedom and how a fear of the outside world can create monsters.

Mesa's uneven gothic English-language debut follows the students and administrators of an elite Spanish school through a series of escalating cruelties. At Wybrany College, 13-year-old Ignacio is frequently bullied. After H ctor, a new kid, is taunted with homophobic slurs, the two boys become allies and the tides shift for Ignacio. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Celia finds a protector in the Advisor, who offers to allow Celia to visit her mother in the impoverished and drug-ridden neighborhood Celia left behind, an apparently innocent gesture that belies his devious intentions. As the second part of the novel reveals, Wybrany's administrators provide anything but safe haven. Mesa shifts from Celia and H ctor to journal entries from Isidro Bedragare, a substitute teacher and failed writer who conned his way into the job and learns about the administrators' sinister behavior and a series of missing students and faculty. Isidro documents the horrors he witnesses at Wybrany in his journal, the least of which being his discovery of a decapitated cat. While Mesa's ambitious two-part structure falters with uneven pacing, sparse details, and a jarring switch to Isidro's point of view, Isidro eventually discovers the school's secrets, and Mesa briefly shines. In a recent glut of neo-gothic tales, this one feels extraneous.
