In Bedford Park, churchgoers are told to kneel during prayers—and then hang their “kneelers” on pegs. The joke delights the artists around young W. B. Yeats, but it points to a deeper loss: where has the magic gone?
In the late 1880s, newly arrived from Dublin, Yeats lives with his family among Bedford Park’s red-brick houses and Pre-Raphaelite echoes. The boy who once imagined those streets as a world of romance now sees ordinary shops, faded art, and young painters insisting that only the present matters. He longs for a life shaped by poetic tradition, where old images and stories might make the everyday supernatural, yet doubts his own power to defend that vision. As artists gather around him, Yeats begins to find kindred spirits—and a way to turn his quarrel with the present into a purpose. What can an old tradition offer a young poet hungry for a different world?
