Franklin, a fox, befriends Roxanne, a goose. Roxanne thanks Franklin with a gift of plum jam and an invitation to a picnic. While reading the invitation, Franklin's wily fox buddy, Dwayne, develops a hankering for a roast goose dinner and sees the picnic as an opportunity to grab Roxanne and make his dinner desires come true.

Meanwhile, Roxanne's girl friends, a duck and a hen, warn her to never trust a fox. But Roxanne won't hear a word of it. The country picnic starts out with cucumber sandwiches, éclairs and cream soda. When Franklin gets stung by a bee Roxanne comes to his rescue by applying her family first aid remedy. Afterwards they go canoeing and Franklin serenades Roxanne.

All the while, Dwayne has been hiding nearby waiting for his chance to strike. Roxanne's girlfriends have also been watching from another hiding place because they vowed to keep an eye on her, just in case their concerns about the fox proved true.

Dwayne's stomach finally gets the best of him. Not waiting until Franklin and Roxanne get back to shore, Dwayne boards a jet ski and makes his move. Mayhem, ensues. Roxanne rescues Franklin from drowning.

Franklin, Roxanne and Roxanne's friends eventually head home together. Yet, despite the lovely and rather lively afternoon they spent together, when Franklin's stomach growls, he lets it slip out that he's hungry enough to eat a goose.

Franklin decides to part company before it's too late. After he's on his way. Roxanne agrees with her friends that it's a good idea to be cautious when making friends with a fox.
