GEOMETRY NATURE DESIGN

GEOMETRY NATURE DESIGN is an interactive and multimedia exploration of design inspired by the geometry of nature: the majority of forms results by processes of growth and time-related transformations, summarizing a research and practice spanning for almost three decades. A digital format enhances the presentation of designs developed by a dynamic process based on generative algorithms in parametric design. This publication expands upon the printed book Form Geometry Structure | from Nature to Design, published by Bentley Institute Press in 2012.  

The premise of GEOMETRY NATURE DESIGN evolves from D’Arcy Thompson’s definition of form as “a diagram of force”. The design of forms shaped by the action of forces emerges from digital three-dimensional models based on algorithmic procedures and user defined parameters, which potentially allow a time-based transformation of a three-dimensional design. Parameters embody the change of shape derived by the growth process—which was object of Thompson’s research on form—facilitated and enhanced by computing methodologies.

The unique contribution of GEOMETRY NATURE DESIGN is to bring a meta-disciplinary approach in an organic fusion of theories and methodologies from different fields of knowledge set in a rigorous framework of investigation. Art and science are also integrated in the presentation format: artwork illustrates mathematical and scientific concepts combining geometry, architecture and graphics. 

Daniela Bertol is a research artist, designer, inventor, independent scholar and yoga teacher. She is the author of Designing Digital Space (John Wiley 1996) the first book on Virtual Reality in architecture. Her articles and research have been published in many art and academic journals, including Leonardo and PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art. She currently working on the development of S.U.N.F.A.R.M., an experiential landscape devoted to art-astronomy-in-nature and ecotherapy.
