Unless they had the protection of a regiment of soldiers, banks at that time were most reluctant to move large amounts of cash or bullion. Johnnie Bell and his friends had just sold a huge herd of longhorns to the hungry miners on the goldfields, and wanted to buy replacement stock at the cattle yards away down river.
