Guy Mannering

At a lonely hut, Guy Mannering’s request for a bed is answered by a woman and a dog screaming in chorus. Then a barefoot boy leads him through a bog-haunted dark toward a mansion that looks like a ruin.

It is a November night in the Scottish border country, where the roads vanish into black moss and the rising sea is close enough to trouble a lost traveller. Newly out of Oxford, Mannering is tired, his horse is failing, and every direction seems to lead him farther from shelter. His guide brings him to Ellangowan, a great old house with tales of ghosts—and a household waiting anxiously for the laird’s wife to give birth. Why has Mannering arrived at this particular door, at this particular hour?
