The rapid development of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, cloud services, and advanced digital infrastructure is transforming the way data centers are designed, constructed, and operated. Modern computing equipment generates increasingly concentrated amounts of heat, particularly in facilities supporting artificial intelligence workloads, GPU clusters, large language models, scientific computing, and other computationally intensive applications. As rack power densities increase, traditional air-cooling systems can become difficult to scale efficiently, creating a growing need for alternative thermal management strategies.
Liquid cooling has emerged as an important technology for addressing these challenges. By transporting heat through a liquid circuit, these systems can remove heat directly from critical electronic components or transfer it through specialized heat exchangers. Depending on the application, liquid cooling can improve thermal stability, support higher equipment densities, reduce the burden on air-handling infrastructure, and create opportunities for more efficient heat rejection and energy recovery.
However, implementing liquid cooling in a data center involves much more than connecting pipes to servers. It requires coordinated engineering across mechanical systems, electrical infrastructure, IT equipment, controls, monitoring, water treatment, commissioning, and facility operations. The selection of an appropriate cooling architecture must consider the characteristics of the computing equipment, expected rack densities, operating temperatures, coolant compatibility, redundancy requirements, maintenance access, and the capabilities of the existing heat rejection system.
This book has been developed to provide a practical engineering perspective on liquid cooling for data centers. It examines the principal technologies, system components, design considerations, installation procedures, commissioning activities, operating practices, and optimization opportunities that determine whether a liquid cooling installation will perform reliably throughout its service life.
The discussion covers direct-to-chip cooling, immersion cooling, rear-door heat exchangers, cooling distribution units, primary and secondary cooling circuits, piping networks, pumps, filtration, heat exchangers, and the integration of liquid cooling with chillers, dry coolers, cooling towers, and economizer systems. Particular attention is given to the relationship between IT equipment and the facility's mechanical infrastructure, because the performance of a liquid cooling system depends on the successful coordination of both.
The book also addresses the practical challenges that can arise during installation and operation. Coolant contamination, incorrect flow distribution, unsuitable materials, leaks, inadequate control sequences, poor commissioning, and insufficient redundancy can compromise the reliability of an otherwise well-designed installation. Understanding these risks before construction and establishing appropriate inspection, testing, monitoring, and maintenance procedures are essential responsibilities for engineering teams and facility operators.
Energy efficiency and sustainability are equally important considerations. Liquid cooling can create opportunities to operate cooling systems at favorable temperatures, increase the use of ambient cooling, and recover useful heat. These benefits are not automatic. They depend on the selected technology, the climate, the facility's operating conditions, the IT equipment requirements, and the overall design of the heat rejection infrastructure. A successful project must balance energy performance with reliability, maintainability, operational flexibility, and lifecycle cost.
This book follows a practical engineering approach. Rather than relying on mathematical formulas, it emphasizes detailed explanations, system relationships, equipment selection considerations, operating p
