Shiatsu is not Japanese massage. It is not a map of points to press, nor acupuncture with the needles taken away.

The hand is not a tool for pressing. It is an organ for listening.

A scholarly book on shiatsu — the Japanese therapy of applied finger pressure — by Kazuhiro Kurosawa, licensed under the Japanese national qualification. Twenty-seven chapters, 228,000 words.

■ Where does the pressure come from?
Most shiatsu books map the receiver's body: meridians, points, where to press. This one begins a step earlier, with the body of the one doing the pressing.

Not from the arm. Whatever you press into the floor, the floor returns — ground reaction force — threaded like a single string from the soles of the feet to the tip of the thumb. Threaded pressure, the play in the joints, the extension relay, the reaction-pressure method: Part II sets these out in anatomy and biomechanics.

Thumbs that give out. Wrists that click. A shoulder that will not rise. For anyone who works with their hands, that is not discomfort but the end of a career. Here the thumb is the outlet of pressure, not its source. The receiver feels depth without weight; in the practitioner, nothing accumulates. Reaching deeper and staying unbroken turn out to be one mechanics, not two.

■ Two layers
Beneath the main text run 222 Scholarly Notes. They carry the sources and the reservations. What is established is written as established; what is likely, as likely; what is still hypothesis is named as hypothesis and left there. Numbers are held as ranges.

C-tactile afferents, polyvagal theory, the continuity of fascia — not the same level of certainty, and not the same tone.

Read only the main text and you can lay hands on someone today. Climb into the notes to see how firm the ground is.

The practice is as concrete: 134 drills at the chapter ends, each with an aim, steps, and a way to know you have done it.

■ Seven parts

・I. The Science of the Way of Touching — where does security come from?
・II. The Biomechanics of Threaded Pressure — where does the force come from?
・III. The Three-Dimensional Approach — from point to volume
・IV. The Philosophy of Mushō — shindan-soku-chiryō and the listening hand
・V. The East's Knowledge of the Body — polished anew in today's words
・VI. Touch and Mental Health — when the hand opens to society
・VII. Growing the Hand — ethics, safety, the age of AI, and self-cultivation

■ An ethic alongside
The one who touches is always the stronger.

Mushō — taking no shō, the diagnostic patterns of East Asian medicine — is not the abandonment of knowledge. It is the refusal to let knowledge stand in front of the body — a silence permitted only to those who have learned all there is to learn. The reverse holds too: mushō without anatomy is merely ignorance.

Hahagokoro, a mother's heart, is Tokujiro Namikoshi's word, reread here as the discipline of restraining one's own strength. Neither mystification nor mechanistic reduction.

For massage therapists, bodyworkers, shiatsu and acupressure practitioners; physiotherapists, occupational therapists, osteopaths, students of the body; and anyone who lays a hand on someone at home.

■ On safety
Shiatsu is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. This book is an educational text, not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent any condition. If a symptom concerns you, see a doctor. The first principle of safety here is one line: when in doubt, do not touch.
