The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) impacts all different types of communities throughout the world, irrespective of socioeconomic status and ethnicity. Within the United States however, it has been found to disproportionately affect low-income groups and minorities.

The impetus for this study was to determine whether, indeed, among African American women aged 30 or older, there was a significant correlation between HIV test participation and educational level. The findings of this study could provide evidence for the need to promote education, culturally competent tools, and educational materials about HIV to vulnerable populations, especially African American women.
