The Marquis of Argyll's campaign in the Highlands of 1644, told by a soldier who has come home from the German wars and understands exactly how little glory there is in any of it. Munro wrote in Highland English and this is the best Scottish historical novel after Scott. This edition is bound with 58 plates of painting, among them works by Edvard Munch, Horatio McCulloch and Philips Wouwerman, dating from 1616 to 1923.
