Published in 1941, Klee Wyck is a deeply moving and evocative memoir by legendary Canadian painter and writer Emily Carr. Through a series of beautifully observed literary sketches, Carr recounts her profound experiences traveling among the First Nations people of British Columbia's rugged Pacific Northwest Coast. Armed with her sketching kit, a few books, and her dogs, she journeyed deep into wild, remote coastal villages and towering cedar forests to document a rich culture and breathtaking landscape.

The book takes its title—meaning "Laughing One"—from the affectionate nickname given to Carr by the Indigenous people of Ucluelet, who recognized her warm and genuine spirit. Winning the Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction in 1941, Klee Wyck is a masterful collection of "sketches in words," offering a timeless, heartfelt tribute to the land and the people who so deeply inspired her iconic art.
