Leonardo – his paintings
As you progress through these pages you may note that some of the works, even the important ones, that for years were thought to be by Leonardo, are missing. The problem of attribution is extremely complex in an artist who worked in a School and therefore had collaborators to whom he entrusted part of his paintings or the partial or total completion of an idea. This changed with the introduction of scientific techniques of enquiry alongside the necessary aesthetic evaluation. If the catalogues contained works solely by Leonardo, the list would be very short because he painted most of them in collaboration with pupils and helpers. The greater or lesser relevance has brought critics and scholars to epic battles.

Chi scorrerà queste pagine noterà l’assenza di alcune opere che per anni sono state ritenute realizzazioni, anche importanti, di Leonardo da Vinci. Il problema dell’attribuzione, molto complesso in un artista che lavorava in una scuola, e aveva quindi collaboratori cui affidava l’esecuzione di parte dei dipinti o la loro conclusione, se non l’intera realizzazione di una propria idea, ha avuto una svolta con l’introduzione di tecniche d’indagine scientifiche che si sono affiancate alle necessarie valutazioni estetiche. Se si fosse dovuto mettere in catalogo solo le opere interamente di mano di Leonardo, l’elenco sarebbe stato molto breve: in quasi tutte compaiono apporti di allievi e aiutanti. La loro maggiore o minore rilevanza ha portato a epiche battaglie tra critici e studiosi.
