Educated at Harvard, Benchley spent much of his career writing for magazines such as Vanity Fair and the New Yorker, and was appreciated for his parodic and occasionally surreal style of writing. Later in life he would take roles in Hollywood movies, work on supplementary books for Broadway productions, and perform voice overs. His work with Paramount and MGM is remembered, particularly his appearances with Fred Astaire and Bob Hope.
