Lucy Raymond

On a June Sabbath, pine shadows flicker across the road to church as Mary Preston walks to her last Sunday-school lesson, wondering what her teaching has planted in Lucy Raymond.

In the quiet village of Ashleigh, beside a broad, wind-rippled river, Lucy sits with two very different classmates: easygoing Bessie and Nelly Connor, a neglected newcomer who has grown up knowing little of the faith the others take for granted. Lucy is lively and eager to please, but her self-will may stand in the way of the good she longs to do. As Miss Preston prepares to leave, her final lesson turns the girls’ attention toward Nelly—and toward the claims of compassion, courage, and Christian love. What will Lucy do with the truths she has been taught?
